Lights Out San Francisco is a project to get City dwellers to turn off all non-essential lights for just one hour on October 20th from 8-9pm. They have participation from the Bay Bridge, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and the TransAmerica Building. The project encourages participants to install at least one CFL in their homes on that day. Go here to pledge your support. This is a great opportunity to get away from electronics and make a statement about energy conservation. And what will we do for that dark hour? The San Francisco Restaurant Association is organizing candlelight dinners and there will be celebrations in the park. For a stay at home night, have a glass of wine on the roof, read a book by candlelight, we might even see a star or two. Perhaps we should try this lights out thing more often.

I run into this every night. My roommates love every light in the house on at all times and I only keep the lights on in the room I’m in. Though we have nothing but CFLs in the house, so … It’ll be cool to see the bridges dark.

This article got me thinking. Sure, lights consume a massive amount of energy, and CFLs are a good step in the right direction. BUT, if we are able to get the Bay Bridge to cooperate to support a green statement, how about this for an idea: Spare the Air Day is great, and I have heard that it actually increases ridership of public transit instead of just being a nice surprise for young professionals who can tuck away a spare dollar fifty for lunch in their pocket as they get on the 30X Marina Express. Why can’t we get the bridge to partially offset the fares people would have paid to ride public transit by increasing the bridge toll for those days?
